WHAT promises to be a stunning concert, featuring Killarney’s Marina Cassidy on harp and Vincent Kennedy on trumpet, will be held in the St Mary’s Church of Ireland – the Church of the Sloes – in Killarney on Thursday, August 15.
The Canticle of Creation performance, commencing at 8.00pm, will raise funds for eco-charities in Kerry with tickets on sale via Eventbrite or at the door on the night for €20.
The concert is sponsored by the Trustees of Muckross House and the Killarney Park Hotel with the Ross Hotel, the Randles Court and the Dromhall Hotel.
The Canticle of Creation piece, in tribute to St Francis, will generate funding for Transition Kerry which creates awareness and networks to ensure that local sustainability is at the core of all actions and policies made at local, national and international levels. Its objective is to accelerate change through inspiring, encouraging, supporting, networking and training communities as they consider and then implement their vision for the future.
St Mary’s Church of Ireland rector Archdeacon Simon J Lumby, who will host the event, said it is fitting to draw people’s attention to the honour and respect in which St Francis is held.
“The encouragement of this Canticle links beautifully with the upcoming season of creation during which we focus our undivided attention on the way in which, through our actions and behaviour, impact upon creation,” he said,
“The lifestyle of humanity has already used up this year’s allocation of our world’s resources. We’ll need 1.7 worlds to keep us going at this rate,” he added.
Marina Cassidy’s skills as a harpist and her singing are very well regarded and she has earned many musical qualifications and awards including the Irish Vocal Heritage Award.
Vincent Kennedy was commissioned by the Fransciscan Order in Ireland to compose the piece and it has been performed in the Franciscan Friary in Killarney as well as in Dublin and Kinsale. He is an internationally renowned composer and conductor who has written symphonies, cantatas, concertos and other works for practically every type of performance.
