Many young people in Kerry are waiting up to a year to be called for their driving test and it is not acceptable, Kerry TD Danny Healy-Rae told a meeting of the Dáil’s Transport Committee.
He voiced his concerns to the Minister for Transport and to Road Safety Authority chief operations officer Brendan Walsh.
“The minister needs to take some urgent action to deal with the emergency that exists at the present time. When you are young, you need to get a chance to go on the road,” he said.

He said those on the list have done the 12 lessons and it is not fair on them to be waiting so long.
“I call on the minister to do something drastic or to take emergency action to help these people,’ he said.
“God almighty, that is like the story, live horse until you get grass. It is not good enough”, he added.
He said if the Road Safety Authority can’t do anything to rectify the problems being experienced that should get out of the situation altogether.
“On behalf of the people who have done their 12 lessons and who have already been waiting for nine months, or for 12 months in many instances, I am calling on the minister to enact some emergency legislation to give them a licence until they can give them a test,” he added.
