Close on two years after it was first proposed, significant progress has finally been made on the planned provision of a slip lane from Mission Road in Killarney into the lower end of the Beech Road car park in an effort to alleviate traffic congestion.
Cllr Brendan Cronin, who has persistently called for the measure to be taken, has been told that consultations with the relevant shareholders have been completed and Killarney Municipal District Council is now preparing the necessary documentation for the statutory process.

It is expected that the matter will be before councillors for consideration and sanction by the end of this year.
Killarney Municipal District Engineer, John Ahern, said the design of the slip road is 95 per cent complete and, in addition to being referred back to councillors, the plans must also go on public display.
Council officials stressed, however, that a funding stream needs to be identified prior to the project going to the construction phase.
The proposal is aimed at reducing the chronic traffic gridlock on Mission Road by creating a new slip road for use by traffic bound for the car park or New Street.
It is expected that the entry point to the slip lane will be in the immediate vicinity of the bottle bank that is currently located at one corner of the car park.
