Skellig Centre to explore Celtic Ireland

THE Skellig Centre for Research and Innovation is offering what promises to be a fascinating course on Celtic Ireland over two weekends in April.

The module, in conjunction with University College Cork, forms part of the Diploma in Local and Regional Studies and students can, if desired, achieve five credits by completing the required module assessment.

The course will provide an opportunity to understand Ancient Ireland’s rich cultural history and traditions. Topics will include the early history of Ireland, early manuscript sources, pre-Christian gods and goddesses, heroic literature and early Irish poetry.

In this module, participants will learn about the diverse range and oldest written sources for the period, surviving evidence and the themes of early heroic literature – for example, the warrior ethos, the role of women and kingship.

The Skellig Centre is an outreach university campus for higher education, research and entrepreneurship that fosters collaboration, community building and a higher education research and entrepreneurial spirit.

The course runs at Caherciveen Library on April 7/8 and April 21/22 and the cost is €200.
