WHILE neighbouring Listowel is in the limelight, Killarney’s performance in this year’s Tidy Towns competition has also given great cause for celebration with the town retaining its prestigious gold medal status and, more impressively, increasing its overall mark by a whopping six points.
Killarney has been awarded 334 points out of a maximum and that is big improvement from the 228 awarded in 2017.
Points were gained in four categories with an extra two marks for sustainability – doing more with less – and an extra mark in community planning and involvement, streetscape and public places, nature and biodiversity and tidiness and litter control.
The marks in the categories headed green spaces and landscaping, residential streets and housing areas and approach roads, streets and lanes remained the same as last year.
Killarney was just five points behind overall winner Listowel and was highlight commended by the judges.
Other Kerry towns and villages to score highly were Kenmare (331), Sneem (328), Knightstown (325), Portmagee (324), Tralee (323) and Tarbert (314),
“Your place in the top rankings is well-deserved. Looking good, Killarney,” the adjudicators concluded.
“Killarney continue to be high achievers in the competition and their high position is very well merited. “
