In what is likely to be a major boost for tourism, the wildlife, beauty and unique attractions of Killarney National Park have been very much on the radar of acclaimed broadcaster and biologist Sir David Attenborough for his new nature series which is due to be aired from this Sunday.

Now aged 96 and renowned for his encyclopedic knowledge of nature, which has inspired several top-rated television documentaries, Attenborough has studied Killarney National Park and the west coast for a new series on British and Irish biodiversity that will attract views in their hundreds and thousands.

The five-episode Wild Isles series on BBC, filmed over three years, will feature Killarney in episode three.

Killarney is noted for its rich biodiversity, including the indigenous red deer and it is that species that really caught the attention of the Wild Isles production team.

It is understood that they have superb footage of stags battling ferociously during the rutting season in the park where Ireland’s last surviving indigenous herd has resided since Neolithic times.

The programme is also expected to explore several walking trails winding through lakes, glens, waterfalls and forests, against a striking mountain backdrop.

The series will explore the woodland, grassland and freshwater and habitats supporting wildlife with technology capturing some incredible footage and creature behaviour.

The series will feature dramatic aerial photography that will really reveal the beauty of the countryside, as well as controlled time-lapse photography and high-tech macro photography.

Narrated by Attenborough, the first of the five episodes is scheduled for this Sunday night on BBC One (7.00pm).
