A KERRY councillor, who is spearheading a campaign to improve chemotherapy services at University Hospital Kerry, is to table a motion on the matter at a meeting of the Health Service Executive’s Regional Health Forum in Cork tomorrow.
Cllr Mickey Sheehy is one of the driving forces behind the Comfort for Chemo Kerry initiative which hopes to develop a centre of excellence to provide care for cancer patients in Kerry and their families.
The charity is anxious to expand the services provided with the assistance of hospital management and plans include the construction of a purpose-built unit on the grounds of UHK.
At tomorrow’s meeting Regional Health Forum in Cork County Hall, Cllr Sheehy will seek support for his proposal to ask the Minister for Health, Simon Harris, to support the expansion of chemotherapy and cancer services on the grounds of University Hospital Kerry given the huge increase in patient numbers since the current unit opened in 2001.
