Septic tanks change a step in the right direction

Cllr John O’Donoghue: Had urged minister to act

The decision to end restrictions on people being able to avail of grant aid to fix faulty septic tanks has been welcomed in Killarney and it has been described as a huge step in the right direction.

Cllr John O’Donoghue, who had raised the pressing issue at a local authority meeting last June, said he is delighted the minister has listened to his call.

He had highlighted at the time that the criteria to qualify for the grant was far too restrictive, particularly the stipulation that the tank had to be registered pre-2013.

“The previous situation encouraged people to turn a blind eye if their septic tank was malfunctioning, which was a disaster from an environmental perspective,” he said.

From January 2024, those with malfunctioning septic tank will be able to avail of the grant.

“It is imperative that we, as a local authority, do all we can to preserve our local ecosystems,” Cllr O’Donoghue stated.
