Sem boys back in another Munster decider

Timmy Moynihan: On target for the Sem

Kerry Colleges SFC (Corn Ui Mhuiri) semi-final:
St Brendan’s College 2-16 Mercy Mounthawk 0-13

Two goals from Glenflesk marksman Callum Cronin fired Killarney’s St Brendan’s College into the Munster Colleges Senior Football Championship final where St Francis College of Rochestown in Cork will provide the opposition in a Kerry-Cork battle for the Corn Uí Mhuiri.

Cronin’s brace at Fitzgerald Stadium this afternoon helped the Sem to a 2-16 to 0-13 victory but it was not as easy as it might seem as Mounthawk were gritty and played very well in stages.

Cronin’s first goal on the half-hour mark set the scene foe a 1-7 to 0-6 half-time advantage but Mounthawk’s Rob Monaghan almost single-handedly kept his school in the game with a power-packed performance.

The Ardfert player kicked 0-8 of their 0-13 total – four from placed balls – but the Sem defence, marshalled superbly by Cian Lynch, also from Glenflesk, kept Tralee dangerman Paddy Lane under the cosh following his hat-trick in the quarter-final.

Sem full forward Luke Crowley – son of Kerry legend Johnny – was also in fine scoring form, booting over seven points with three from frees and by the time Callum Cronin registered his second goal last on, the game was already well decided with a nine points winning margin.

Apart from Cronin and Crowley’s accuracy, what will satisfy the Sem management most is the spread scorers on the day with nine players getting in on the act, including wing back Cillian Courtney, the industrious Alex Hennigan and Timmy Moynihan from Spa, the younger brother of Kerry star Dara.

St Brendan’s College team and scorers: Shay O’Meara, M Lynch, C Lynch, J Williams, C Courtney (0-2), K O’Shea, S Fitzgerald (0-1), J Kelliher (0-1), D Ryan, T Moynihan (0-1), A O’Neill (0-1), J Moynihan (0-1), C Cronin (2-1), L Crowley (0-7, 0-3 frees), A Hennigan (0-1).

Subs: P Moynihan for Courtney, L Daly, for Williams, E Kelly for Cronin, N O’Carroll for Ryan.
