‘And I see us meeting at the end of the town’

THE Irish flag is flying at half-mast over Killarney’s municipal headquarters this Friday in memory of all those who have lost their lives to the coronavirus.

Mayor of Killarney, Cllr Michael Gleeson, had asked council officials to lower the tricolor in remembrance of people who have died from Covid-19.

There were 1,403 fatalities up to and including yesterday and Cllr Gleeson said it is right that the council would remember them and all that they have achieved.

He made the proposal via an online WebEx meeting of Killarney Municipal District Council and it was unanimously supported by his colleagues.

“They, in their own time and in their own way, saw hardship and endured suffering but they overcame and lived good lives. Let us, like them, have courage and strength and we too will overcome and make our world a better place for all,” Mayor Gleeson stated.

He said many good people are now gone but, in remembering them, he asked the public to think of them as poet Paddy Kavanagh thought of his mother:

Mayor Michael Gleeson: Tribute

And I think of you walking along a headland
Of green oats in June,
So full of repose, so rich in life
And I see us meeting at the end of the town

On a fair day by accident, after
The bargains are all made and we can walk
Together through the shops and stalls and markets
Free in the oriental streets of thought.
