Seamus has his charges on course

East Kerry boss Seamus Moynihan

FAVOURITES and holders East Kerry will play either last year’s beaten finalists Mid Kerry or West Kerry in the quarter-finals of the Kerry Minor Football Championship.

East Kerry, with star player David Clifford on the bench, overcame Austin Stacks 3-14 to 0-10 in this week’s round two clash played at Rathmore and they now await an away trip to meet the winners of the Mid Kerry v West Kerry tie on Friday night.

The Seamus Moynihan trained East Kerry are strong favourites to retain the title as, in addition to the sharpshooting Clifford, they have a number of other inter-county stars in the squad, including the impressive Cian Gammell of Legion, Chris O’Donoghue of Glenflesk, Sean O’Leary of Kilcummin, Brian Friel of Rathmore and Pa Warren of Gneeveguilla.

Dr Crokes, meanwhile, will take on Kenmare District and the Killarney side will be relatively confident of advancing to the penultimate stages of the competition if they hit top form and given that they have the advantage of home venue.

St Brendans – surprise 1-16 to 0-9 winners against Firies – have been drawn at home to Dingle who just edged out Laune Rangers, 1-17 to 2-11, last night while St Kierans are at home to Feale Rangers.

The quarter-finals draw was made by Kerry minor team boss Peter Keane, who is the sponsor of the championship, and the games will be played on Tuesday next, July 18.
