Scorchers fly the banner with pride

The world runners-up from Killarney Scorchers finally take delivery of the banner

A TALENTED and energetic troupe of cheerleaders from Killarney this week finally took possession of a coveted second place banner from the 2018 Summit International Cheerleading Championship in Florida.

It was a long time coming as Killarney Scorchers competed in the event last May but due to an adjudication error, they were deprived of their second position and placed fourth. The judges were immediately alerted to the mistake but they were unable to rectify it on the day.

Patience, is a virtue, however, and the Scorchers had it in abundance and now the precious banner has been secured.

Hayley and Danny Farkas Murphy, coaches with Killarney Scorchers, have been in communication with competition organisers, Varsity, and a mountain of red tape later, the second place banner has finally arrived.

“Unfortunately, the team, parents and supporters were deprived of the golden winning moment on the American stage but, in great Irish style, the celebrated their success at the Brehon Hotel in Killarney on Sunday at the 10th anniversary and awards party,’ said Hayley.

The banner was a surprise presentation to the hard-working team at the function and it sparked great celebrations.

The victory was eloquently summed up by elated coach Danny who exclaimed: “They are not only champions – they are second in the world”.
