School’s great achievers are honoured

Scoil Phobail Sliabh Luachra in Rathmore has recognised the accomplishments of its students at its annual awards ceremony.

The event brought together students, parents, staff and community members to celebrate the educational, personal, social and academic achievements of students and the positive contribution they have made to the school and their communities.

Subject Awards were presented to: Anna O’Mahony (Languages), Shauna McCarthy (Sciences), Jennifer Buckley (Music), Olivia Cronin (Home Economics/Anne Casey Joy Memorial Award), Jamie Daly (Humanities), Sarah Cronin (Art), Conor Moynihan (PE), Aidan McAuliffe (Design Technology), Charlotte Leandra Poetry Van Brug (English), Dylan O’Connor (Maths) and Eoin Cashman (Business and Enterprise).

Recipients of awards to recognise a significant and positive contribution to school and community life were presented to Andee Lenihan (Active Citizenship Award), Hugh O’Sullivan (Spirit of the School Award), Abbie Herlihy and Noirin Healy (Spirit of the Community Award), Ava Twomey, Aoife Murphy, Christine Moynihan, Ciara Murphy (Nano Nagle Award), John Hughes (Endeavour Award), Jennifer Buckley (Sliabh Luachra Arts and Culture Award), Lainey Harty and Maire Fitzpatrick (Leadership Award), Mariia Lukashevych (Principal’s Award), first year girls’ basketball team 2023/24 (Junior Sport Award) and Grace Murphy (Senior Sports Award).

The Paud O’Leary Memorial Award was presented to Joan O’Mahony for her outstanding contribution to basketball in the school and community over many years.

The students who received awards for academic excellence included Ruth O’Mahony (Junior Cycle Student of the Year), Eoin Cashman (TY Student of Year), Treasa Cremin, Grace Mullally, Jack White (Academic Excellence of Leaving Cert Applied) Gavin Barry, Tara Buckley, Olivia Cronin, Ciara Dineen, Roisin Daly, Katelyn Cotter, James Doyle, Katie Rea, Bridget Sheehan, Sumamah Haider, Laura Hickey, John Hughes, Mateusz Kuzia and Elaine McSweeney (Academic Excellence in Leaving Certificate).

The Leaving Certificate Student of the Year Award went to Sean O’Keeffe.

The ceremony was greatly enhanced by a heartwarming speech from guest speaker and former pupil Eoin Lawlor, who is now manager for Craft Apprenticeships at SOLAS.

The occasion marked the last awards ceremony for Denis Kerins who has recently retired as principal and received a special presentation from the Student Council on behalf of all students.

Mairéad Lucey, who has been appointed as principal, took the opportunity to speak of her joy at joining the school community and congratulated all the award winners, their parents, staff members on such wonderful achievements.
