TWO young Killarney women who signed up for a major challenge to test their stamina, endurance and determination – without knowing where they would be sent to do so – are currently enduring a 180km hike in the Westhoek region of Belgium.

Sarah Canavan (22) and Sarah Kenny (23) will walk for 10-daya while carrying all their camping and cooking equipment, clothes, food and water – and they must survive on a paltry €3.25 a day.

They enrolled for the Irish Girl Guides’ Explorer Belt challenge which also involves them having to partake in a number of projects, including completing a service for the local community.

They will also have to find out about local history and culture using traditional research methods and without using a smartphone. They are currently taking in many of the Flanders Fields historical battle sites.

They didn’t know where they were being sent until they arrived at Dublin Airport where the 12 participants were presented with boarding passes for a flight to  Brussels, before taking a train to Oostende.

The two Sarahs, who are both leaders with the guides in Killarney, have been in training over the past few months by hiking and taking part in regular gym sessions.

Sarah Canavan lives in Galway where she is studying commerce in NUI Galway and Sarah Kenny is in Dublin where she is a dietitian in St James’s Hospital.
