TWO Killarney secondary school students embraced their native language for Seachtain na Gaeilge by taking part in the Aistritheoirí Óga Irish language translation competition.
Saoirse Coffey and Rebecca Doyle, transition year students in St Brigid’s Presentation Secondary School, displayed their flair for linguistics this Tuesday when they translated a document from English to Irish before Rebecca translated a second document from French to Irish and Saoirse did likewise from Spanish to Irish.
The theme associated with the documents to be translated was climate change so it was no easy feat.
The competition is run by the European Commission in conjunction with the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht. It is aimed at secondary schools throughout Ireland and it helps to promote the Irish language and provides exposure to job opportunities in the future in the area of translation.
“We are keen to promote language learning within the school and, I must say, we are very fortunate as the girls always show great interest and ability,” said teacher Sinéad Collins.
“Saoirse and Rebecca are very diligent students and this was not only a wonderful opportunity for them but it is also a great achievement,” she added.
