A popular Killarney nun, who devoted her entire life to her vocation and to helping and supporting others, will be laid to rest in Aghadoe Lawn Cemetery this Saturday afternoon.
Sr Pius O’Brien, a native of Kilcummin, was a member of the Mercy Order and she spent the majority of her long life based in the Holy Cross Convent on Rock Road.
She passed away peacefully on Wednesday, in University Hospital Kerry, surrounded by her loving family and Mercy Sisters.
Remembered as a kind, compassionate, gentle and caring lady, her fellow sisters said she has left a legacy of immeasurable love and kindness as she selflessly devoted herself to all who crossed her path.
“She will be fondly remembered by all those whose lives she touched with divine love, warmth and care,” the Mercy Sisters said.
The Kerry Diocesan to Lourdes Pilgrimage volunteers, in a tribute, said: “Saddened to hear the lovely Sr Pius has gone to her Heavenly reward. We have such fond memories of her many trips to Lourdes. She was so spiritual, caring and a joy to be around. May her noble soul rest in peace”.
Sr Pius, who was very actively involved with the Kerry Stars Special Olympics Club, was predeceased by her mother Bridget, her father Aeneas, her brother Bernie and sister Sheila Healy.
She is survived by her sister Sr Elizabeth, brother-in-law Hugh Healy, her nephews Paudie and Aeneas Healy and Aeneas O’Brien, nieces Martina Healy, Bridget Flynn, Elizabeth Joy and Joan O’Neill, nephews-in-law, nieces-in-law, her extended family, Mercy Sisters and her many friends from her business, social and charitable communities.
Requiem Mass for Sr Pius will be celebrated at 3 o’clock on Saturday afternoon with burial afterwards in Aghadoe Lawn Cemetery, Killarney.

The family has asked for donations in lieu of flowers, if desired, to be made to the Kerry Stars Special Olympics Club.
