Sad passing of GAA stalwart Con

The late Con Griffin: hugely popular

A VERY familiar face in the Fitzgerald Stadium down through the years and an ever-present at many GAA occasions throughout the county, the sad news filtered through today of the death of Con Griffin, formerly of Cahill’s Park, Tralee, who lived for most of life at Bishop Moynihan Crescent in Killarney.

Con passed away, surrounded by his family at home, following a very brief illness.

A real community man and a great Gael, he was to the forefront of the Fitzgerald Stadium Committee for several years and he was a familiar face at all major fixtures as he set about his tasks, usually taking up position just inside the gate leading to the pitch from the player and VIP area in the O’Sullivan Stand.

Con’s role was to ensure the public address link-up was operational and he was always reliable as he set about his tasks with great enthusiasm and good humour, mixing with many supporters on his frequent trips up and down the steps to and from the PA box at the rear of the stand.

Con was a great supporter of Dr Crokes and one of his proudest days was watching his grandson, Jack Griffin, winning an All-Ireland minor championship medal with Kerry in 2017, when he lined out at full forward in Croke Park.

A wonderful family man and deeply religious, Con was a familiar face in both St Mary’s Cathedral and the Franciscan Friary over the years and he always enjoyed meeting people and exchanging the news of the day.

He is survived by his wife, Cáit (née Kissane), sons Conor, John, Kieran, Padraig and Colum, daughters Áine, Kathryn, Claire and Maire, 18 grandchildren, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, sisters Geraldine and Marie, brothers Martin and Tony, other relatives and many good friends.

Reposing at O’Shea’s Funeral Home, Killarney on Thursday evening from 4.30pm to 6.30pm, removal will take place afterwards to St Mary’s Cathedral. Requiem Mass will be on Friday at 10.30am with burial afterwards in Aghadoe Lawn Cemetery.

The family has asked for donations in lieu of flowers, if desired, to be made to Palliative Care.
