THEY have come in for some bad press for encroaching on public roadways and in front of oncoming traffic, particularly during the frenetic rutting season, but the sight of deer in their natural habitat is truly one to behold.
Over 100 people will be lucky enough to get a closer view of their antics this Sunday during a guided rut watch event in the heart of Killarney National Park.
With the crunching clash of antlers, the red deer breeding season hears stags roar out and, like gladiators, enter battle against their ferocious rivals for the right to breed with their harem of hinds.
The rut is one of nature’s amazing annual spectacles and it has been part of Killarney life for over 6,000 years.
This Sunday’s event – which is a complete sell-out – will see the Irish Deer Commission, in conjunction with the Department of Culture, Heritage and Gaeltacht, host a supervised rut watch event in the park and it promises to be something spectacular.
There will be a number of speakers on the day and a collection of antlers to view.
“Killarney National Park is one of the best locations in the world to watch wild red deer, at a safe distance, during the rut,” said Damien Hannigan of the Irish Deer Commission.
Only those who have received confirmation of their places are eligible to attend.
