There should be a zero tolerance stance adopted to the problem of horses that are left roaming in public green areas, the Mayor of Killarney has insisted.
Cllr Niall Kelleher said it is not acceptable to allow the animals to roam and graze in area where children are playing and it was a cause of real concern for in residents in a number of local housing estates.
“I have reported instances to the county vet’s office – sometimes action is taken and more times it is not. What steps are being taken to deal with this issue?” Cllr Kelleher asked council officials.
Cllr Maura Healy-Rae said the matter was causing a very precarious situation, not only for kids playing in green areas but for motorists trying to drive through the estates.
Council officials said under the control of horses bye-laws there are exclusion zones, including the urban district of Killarney, which prohibit horses on public spaces without authorisation from the local authority, An Garda Siochana or the county veterinary office.
Outside of that, the presence of horses in public open spaces should be notified to the county vet’s office.
