FURIOUS residents and business owners determined to prevent further controversial traffic-calming measures on the Muckross Road in Killarney are to meet this Thursday night to discuss developments and to formulate a strategy.

Many of them attended a meeting of the Killarney Municipal Authority in Killarney Library on Wednesday at which they made their views known – in no uncertain terms.

They told councilors, engineers and local authority officials that they feared for public safety if the next planned phase of the road-narrowing works proceeds as planned.

Gardai and emergency services personnel have also voiced concern on the issue which was first highlighted by Killarney Today last week.

The residents said the road is already a traffic blackspot, particularly during the hectic tourist season, and if the footpaths are widened and roads narrowed further, it could lead to an ambulance or fire brigade being prevented from gaining access to properties off the main road.

The council said it would consider the matters raised and discuss the issue with the National Roads Authority.

A public meeting to highlight the matter will be held this evening at 7.00pm at the entrance to Muckross Grove, beside Flesk Bridge.

“We need as many people as possible to attend this meeting if we are to have any chance of putting a stop to these works for now,” said local resident Liza O’Sullivan.

“It will be hard for the council to argue their points if there is large support from those this will affect the most,” she added.

“When the works are complete it will be too late. Now is the time for action,” Ms O’Sullivan said.
