Nasty incidents of road rage have occurred during right-of-way stand-offs on a narrow bridge on the main road from Killarney to Rossbeigh, it has been claimed.

Fianna Fáil general election candidate Cllr Michael Cahill said the Caragh Bridge outside Glenbeigh, on the N70 Ring of Kerry road, is a single-lane carriageway on a busy thoroughfare and it is often the scene of small traffic accidents, near misses or bouts of road rage.

Cllr Michael Cahill: Concerns over bridge issues

The only safe solution appears, in the short-term, seems to be to install traffic lights there, he maintained.

“There are daily issues there with some drivers attempting to be first on the bridge to gain the right of way, while others feel bullied by this behaviour. Some react, of course, and stand-offs are not uncommon,” he stated.

Cllr Cahill said cyclists and pedestrians are also in danger from oncoming traffic when they attempt to cross the bridge.

“The Ring of Kerry is Ireland’s premier tourist route and, as I have said on numerous occasions over the years, the condition of this national secondary route is 70 per cent substandard and requires major investment,” he said.
