Residents told they are moving but they don’t know where

Hotel Killarney: Contract is about to expire

All asylum seekers that have been accommodated in Hotel Killarney for a number of months have been officially informed that they are to be moved to other locations in a matter of weeks, KillarneyToday.com can reveal.

They have received written notification that the facility will no longer be available to the International Protection Accommodation Service (IPAS) as the contract with the hotel is coming to an end.

In a letter, a copy of which has been seen by KillarneyToday.com, it states that they are to be accommodated in other locations and that the moves, which will commence shortly, will take place over the coming weeks.

The letter from the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth said they will all shortly be confirmed of where they are moving to and the date the moves will take place.

“We will not be in a position to confirm where you are moving until you receive your letter with the location. We will make arrangements for transport to your new accommodation”.

The letter, dated February 20, adds: “We know this move will be upsetting for residents and want to apologise in advance for any disruption this will cause”.

IPAS said due to the severe pressure to source accommodation, requests for moves to particular locations cannot be facilitated.

Those with children of school-going age have been assured that the IPAS resident welfare team will provide any assistance the child may need in relation to school places at their new locations.

Just under 400 asylum seekers have been living in Hotel Killarney since November and the vast majority of the international protections applicants thee are single men.

Several families, including children attending local schools, have also been housed at the facility since last October.
