A BRIGHT spark Killarney student has put her knowledge of and fluency in the French language to great use by winning a category in a keenly contested nationwide translation competition.
Rebecca Doyle, a fifth year student in St Brigid’s Secondary School, entered a translation competition, independently of her school, and she was delighted to learn that she was deemed a winner.
The event was organised by the Irish Translators’ and Interpreters’ Association which was set up in 1986 and it is the only professional association in Ireland representing the interests of practising translators and interpreters.
Secondary school students are invited to translate an excerpt from a novel or short story from French, Chinese (Mandarin), German, Irish, Italian, Polish, Japanese or Spanish into English and Rebecca’s work impressed the adjudicators.
She should have received her award at the ceremony in Dublin but due to Covid-19 restrictions the prize had to be presented virtually.
