CLOSE on 1,000 students from secondary schools all over Kerry attended an AXA RoadSafe Roadshow at the INEC in Killarney this Tuesday and they were greeted with an informative presentation aimed at highlighting the importance of road safety to young people.

The presentations were spearheaded by Garda Peter McCarthy from the Kerry Garda Traffic Corps, Peter Crowley from the Ambulance Service and Dan Keane from the Fire Brigade service while University Hospital Kerry Accident and Emergency consultant, Dr Martin Boyd, showed graphic slides of injuries sustained by road accident victims.

Dr Boyd also told the student body about the dreadful task he has to endure when telling parents that it is not good news about their child.

An emotional and highly-charged presentation was given by Anne Tydings who lost her son, Padraig, in a car crash 13 years ago this Tuesday.

The event ended with a dramatic re-enactment of a road crash outside the Gleneagle Hotel with Paudie Mangan from the Killarney Fire Service, and his team, showing the students how they remove a causality from an accident scene.

Killarney Community College Transition Year coordinator, Kerri McCarthy, described the roadshow was very powerful presentation.

“You could hear a pin drop inside the INEC which had more than 1,000 students present. Hearing the real-life accounts from all the speakers had a huge impact on all present with the key message of slow down and respect the road imprinted in all student minds,” she said.
