Rap group biopic set in West Belfast

Killarney’s very own Hollywood A-lister Michael Fassbender is to star in a new biopic about an Irish rap group.

The feature film – named Kneecap after the band – is billed as a raucous anti-establishment comedy and, in addition to the Academy Award nominated Fossa-reared actor, is stars real-life band members Mo Chara, Móglaí Bap and DJ Próvaí who play themselves.

The group first sprang to prominence six years ago for their blend of nationalist Irish rap which addresses with the reality of growing up in Northern Ireland after the Troubles.

Set in west Belfast in 2019, it chronicles how fate brings the trio together and how they then go on to change the sound of Irish music forever

The film is written and directed by Rich Peppiatt who previously directed a music video for the band.

It will have its world premiere at the renowned Sundance Film Festival in Utah next month where it will screen on the opening night on Thursday, January 18.

Founded in 1978, the Sundance Film Festival is the world’s most prestigious festival dedicated to independent films. Funding for the film was provided by Northern Ireland Screen, the Irish Language Broadcast Fund, Screen Ireland, the BFI, Coimisiún na Meán and TG4, with backing from Great Point Media.
