KILLARNEY and District Motor Club has joined in the tributes to rally stars Shawn Rayner and Steve Dear who died in a tragic crash at a motorsport event in Hampshire in the UK.
Driver Shawn Rayner, 52, and navigator Steve Dear, 64, both from UK, were killed in the Loco 2 Stages rally at an army base near Basingstoke on Friday.
They were both well known in Killarney and Shawn had competed in the Rentokil Initial Historic Stages Rally in the town. teaming up with Millstreet’s Declan Casey, in early December in his Ford Escort RS1800. Shawn and Steve’s son Declan competed for the Killarney event in 2016.
They were both members of the Historic Rally Car Register and rallying world was stunned and saddened to learn of their deaths.
In a statement, Killarney and District Motor Club said: “We would like to offer our deepest sympathy and condolences to the family and friends of Shawn Rayner and Steve Dear. Absolute true gentlemen, their love and passion for the sport of tallying was evident throughout the events that they contested. They will be sadly missed by all”.
