Radio Kerry are great sports at IMRO awards

Tim Moynihan scooped silver in the local/regional category of the sports broadcaster of the year awards

Radio Kerry staff proved they were great sports when they scooped two big awards at the Irish Music Rights Organisation’s annual awards on Friday night.

The weekend sports show – with the team spearheaded by Joe O’Mahony and including Killarney man Ivan Hurley and John Drummey – won gold in the local/regional category of the sports programme of the year contest.

Adding to the celebrations was hugely popular commentator Tim Moynihan who scooped silver in the local/regional category of the sports broadcaster of the year.

JJ O’Shea won bronze in the specialist music broadcaster of the year category

Moynihan and Ambrose O’Donovan have formed one of the most colourful broadcasting partnerships in the GAA and last year they were formally recognised with an award from the Kerry Association in Dublin

Making it a hat-trick of successes for the local station on Friday night was JJ O’Shea who won bronze in the specialist music broadcaster of the year category for his show The Music Tree.

The awards ceremony, held in the usual venue at the Lyrath Estate in Kilkenny, also saw Newstalk named station of the year, The Sound of Waterford winning local radio station of the year, Barry Lenihan of RTÉ named news reporter of the year and Nathan Murphy of Newstalk crowned sports broadcaster of the year.
