Quieter than quiet on the streets of Killarney

No feet on the street: Main Street, Killarney this Sunday afternoon

THE streets of Killarney were eerily quiet this Sunday as locals respected the government’s plea to stay at home while emergency services personnel continue their battle with the Covid-19 pandemic.

All but a handful of essential business premises remained closed and the vast majority of people respected requests to those exercising not to stray beyond 2km of their homes.

Even the supermarkets and fuel stations were incredibly quiet and gardai, who were maintaining a watching brief, reported no difficulties after they stepped up daily patrols to minimise the numbers of people congregating in town.

Gardaí increased mountain bike patrols and they have also been visiting scenic areas where young people have been known to gather. Additional mobile patrols are in place throughout the community and in housing estates.

Gardaí are also linking up with local community groups and volunteers to identify people who may be in need of assistance, particularly the elderly and the vulnerable.
