THERE is still plenty of time for members of the public to make their views known on plans to create five major new cycle lanes in Killarney with the deadline for the receipt of submissions not until 5.00pm on Wednesday of next week, February 17.
Kerry County Council has very actively sought the views of the public through advertisements, press campaigns and via a very informative and detailed webinar which was promoted well in advance and attracted more than 120 interested parties online.
The plans are also on display on the windows of the town hall in Killarney and the Kerry County Council engineers involved have agreed to engage personally with members of the public, by prior appointment, to discuss the finer details of the proposals or any concerns that might arise.

The new cycle lane routes are aimed at improving accessibility and safety and the development will have a very positive impact on the environment given that it will significantly reduce the need for people to use their vehicles.
As it stands, Killarney has a population of just over 14,500 of which more than 12,600 live within a 10-minute cycle of the town centre.
The project, for which government funding will be available, is part of a stated urban regeneration vision that seeks to mirror the world class natural environment of Killarney National Park with an exceptional urban experience that sets the town apart as a world class tourism destination.
A new public realm plan is being planned for Killarney town centre and provision will be made for the cycle paths to eventually link up with the streets.
The cycle paths, which will extend to approximately 3,880m, will be provided at the following locations:
- Upper Lewis Road: From the St Anne’s Road junction to south of Bridgefield Estate
- Rock Road: From the car park northwards to the N22 roundabout at Cleeny
- Park Road: From the Park Road roundabout to the Franciscan Friary junction
- Deerpark Road: From the Park Road junction to the Gaelscoil Faithleann junction
- Gaelscoil Road: From Deerpark Road to the Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre
- Upper Lewis Road: From the St Anne’s Road junction to south of Bridgefield Estate

Members of the public are again being encouraged and invited to make submissions on the proposals, before 5.00pm on February 17. Submissions should be addressed to Part 8 – Killarney Cycle Lanes, Administrative Officer, Kerry County Council, Roads, Transportation and Marine Department, Room 115, Áras an Chontae, Rathass, Tralee or sent by e-mail to: roads@kerrycoco.ie.
