ANTI water charges campaigners from Killarney were to the fore of a peaceful but determined protest on the streets of Castleisland on Saturday as defiant members of the public turned out in force to voice their opposition to what they consider an unjust form of taxation.
High-profile Killarney campaigners Kevin Murphy, Brian and Lorraine McCarthy and Matt Hodd spearheaded the protest which attracted an estimated 200 people, many carrying hand-painted signs and printed banners condemning the government’s action.
They were joined by South Kerry Independent TDs, Michael Healy-Rae and Tom Fleming, as well as a number of community group, residents’ association activists and private citizens from all parts of Kerry, north Cork and west Limerick.
Kevin Murphy, from Killarney, a respected voice on the issue, remarked: “We would like to thank the people of Castleisland and the surrounds for attending, especially those who handed out fliers, put up posters and informed the general public about the protest.
“We would like to thank An Garda Síochána for their aid with the traffic,” he added.
