Progress on wall promised by year end

Plans: Killarney Burial Ground

PLANS for the installation of a Columbarium wall in the new Killarney Burial Ground – where cremated ashes can be stored – are currently being examined.

The matter has been raised by Mayor of Kerry, Cllr Niall Kelleher, who reminded Kerry County Council officials that the facility was promised when the new graveyard was in the planning stages.

“There are regular phone calls being made to our funeral directors who don’t know what to say. People have ashes and they want to put their loved ones in a resting place,” Mayor Kelleher said.

“There can be no excuses. There is no reason why it can’t be done,” he added.

“We borrowed the money for this but it hasn’t happened – it’s like building a house and not putting in a kitchen,” he mayor said.

Council officials sad proposals are progressing and it is hoped to have the project “well advanced” before the end of the year.

A spokesman said they want to ensure it’s done properly and they were consulting with other local authorities who have undertaken similar projects.
