THE man whose body was discovered on a street near a GAA stadium last night had used homeless services on a number of occasions in the past but had not done so since last Spring, it has emerged.
The remains of the man, understood to be 75 years of age, were found on a grass area near a traffic junction at Boherbee, Tralee shortly before 7.30pm on Sunday.
A passer-by alerted the authorities when the man’s body was discovered close to a shopping trolley.
The grim discovery was made just outside Austin Stack Park just two hours after the stadium had hosted the Kerry senior football championship final between Dr Crokes and South Kerry.
The area was cordoned off and the State Pathologist’s Office has been notified. A post mortem examination is expected to take place later today at University Hospital Kerry.
Gardaí, who are currently treating the matter as a sudden death, remain at the scene and a decision on the nature of their investigation will not be made until the cause of death is determined.
