LET there be light – that was the emphatic demand from frustrated locals in Rathmore and their concerned public representatives promised they would do their best to oblige.

A public meeting organised to highlight long-running concerns about inadequate street lighting in the area heard that residents and businesses were no longer prepared to tolerate being left in the dark.

They said it was high time that the street lighting system was brought up to standard and concern was expressed that the matter had been long-fingered for too long.

Perhaps not surprisingly in an election year, there were several politicians in attendance to listen to local views and they said they would raise the matter with the appropriate authorities in an attempt to sort out the difficulties being experienced.

“All the public representatives and local elections candidates said they will do their utmost to ensure the lights are brought up to the standard they should be in the town.

“We plan to keep the pressure on until they sort it,” said community council spokesman Michael O’Mahony.

The politicians in attendance on the night included Deputy Tom Fleming, Deputy Brendan Griffin, Senator Tom Sheahan, Cllrs Brendan Cronin, Danny Healy-Rae, Michael Gleeson, John Sheahan, John Joe Culloty, Anne McEllistrim, Cathal Walshe and Tom Doherty. Local elections candidates Lynda Horgan and Niall Kelleher also attended.
