Plenty of climbers but no place to park at Cardiac Hill

Cllr Michael Gleeson: car park call

A NEW car park is urgently needed at a popular walking route in Killarney, known locally as Cardiac Hill.

Hundreds of locals and an increasing number of visitors embark on the trek every day, particularly at this time of the year, but the availability of suitable parking facilities has reached a crisis situation.

Cardiac Hill – which involves a difficult and steep climb of hundreds of rock-like steps – is part of Torc mountain and the starting point is just off the main N71 Killarney-Kenmare road at Muckross.

Raising the matter at a meeting of the Killarney Municipal District council, Cllr Michael Gleeson asked local authority officials to enter into discussions with the National Parks and Wildlife Service with a view to developing parking facilities within National Park boundaries.

Council officials said, however, that that the car park adjacent to the starting point of the walk is the property of the National Parks and Wildlife Service but discussions on the matter would be pursued.

Meanwhile, Cllr Gleeson was told that a proposed development of a new walkway and cycle path from Ross Road to Muckross Road is currently in the design phase and the planning process is expected to commence in June.
