Pledge to keep lobbying for remembrance garden

Killarney House and Gardens

A KERRY councillor whose call for the development of a remembrance garden tribute to Covid-19 victims, on the grounds of Killarney House and Gardens, was rejected, has insisted he has not given up on the idea.

Cllr Michael Cahill said the tranquil memorial space would be a fitting place to remember those that passed away during the pandemic.

“The restrictions imposed because of this virus did not allow us to grieve for our loved ones in the traditional way that has been developed over centuries.

“Many people have not found closure because of that and many feel that they have been shortchanged or that their loved ones did not get a proper send-off,” he said.

Cllr Cahill pointed to the recent service in Dublin where thousands of white roses were laid out at the National War Memorial as a tribute to those who died.

“Something similar should be done here to remember everyone who passed during the pandemic in a location more accessible to the people of Kerry,” he stated.

Cllr Cahill said there are many suitable venues for a garden of remembrance in Killarney or Tralee as well as in several other locations around the county.

“For a small investment, we can create a little haven. It is important, for people’s peace of mind, that a traumatic event like a death in the family is treated sensitively and that due recognition and tribute is paid to their dearly departed loved ones,” he remarked.

Minister of State for Heritage and Electoral Reform, Malcolm Noonan, who is responsible for national parks, said the grounds of Killarney House preserve and protect the aesthetic and vision of the former owners, the McShain family, with axial views of the lakes and mountains.

He said it would be inappropriate, from a landscape perspective, to insert any new element or structure not in keeping with the original design.

“To do so would detract from the carefully recreated historic ambience at Killarney House,” the minister stressed.
