Planning approved for school car park but funds still awaited

There is regular traffic chaos at St Oliver’s during drop-off and pick-up times

The chronic traffic situation outside the gates of St Oliver’s National School in Killarney is so serious that two accidents occurred there in the first three weeks since the school holidays ended, a local councillor has complained.

The gridlock at school drop-off and collection times has been problematic for years and, despite the matter having been raised on several occasions, it is getting worse rather than improving, Cllr Martin Grady said.

“It’s just not good enough at this stage. Residents in Ballycasheen are not in favour of a one-way system on the road but some solution must be found,” he said.

Council officials said a planning application has been granted to the school for a car park and a bus and set-down area.

It is the council’s understanding that these works will proceed once funding is received.

Killarney Municipal District Engineer, John Ahern, said he has met with the management of St Oliver’s on a number of occasions and it is now a matter for the school authorities.

“A lot of this goes back to the Department of Education and not to us,” Mr Ahern stressed.

Gardai have been present at the school gates on a number of morning this term to ensure there are no breaches of parking regulations.
