Plan is scrapped following objections

The initial plans – now significantly amended – included a subway running from one side of the bypass to the other

CONTROVERSIAL plans by Kerry County Council to include an underground pedestrian and cycle tunnel as part of the long-awaited N22 Lewis Road-Kilcummin Road junction project have been scrapped.

The proposal had sparked a strong reaction from the public with a total of 60 written submissions received during the public consultation process.

The council had proposed developing a pedestrian and cycle subway linking Upper Lewis Road to the realigned L2033 Kilcummin road to facilitate crossings of the busy bypass by vulnerable road users.

The idea sparked a furious backlash, particularly by residents of Bridgefield Estate who expressed fears that a tunnel – close to the entrance to the estate – could lead to anti-social behaviour.

Over 40 of the 60 submissions received by the council related to concerns about the risk of anti-social behaviour and lack of need while others sought additional footpaths and extra lighting on Lewis Road and on the Kilcummin Road.

At a meeting to discuss the issue this Monday morning, the subway idea was abandoned on the proposal of Mayor Michael Gleeson.

The overall plan for the N22 Lewis Road-Kilcummin Road junction project was given the green light with Cllr Niall Kelleher proposing.
