KILLARNEY based Peter Bellew has been appointed to the high-profile position of chief operations officer with Ryanair.
He is leaving his post as chief executive of Malaysia Airlines to join Michael O’Leary in an airline he has worked for in the past.
“I am excited to return home to Ryanair and take up the challenge to grow the operation sustainably,” he said.
“I look forward to working with all the team and all the crews I know so well to further develop our growth to 600 aircraft over the next six years.”
Peter, 52, a native of Meath and a graduate of Trinity College, has been living in Fossa, Killarney for several years. He is married to Grainne and they have four children.
He previously worked with Kerry Airport as marketing manager and airport manager and later became director of flight operations with Ryanair before being headhunted by Malaysia Airlines.
Peter, who has been based in Kuala Lumpur since 2015, joined the carrier as chief operations officer and was later appointed executive director before taking over the CEO’s role.
Commenting on the appointment, which will commence on December 1, Ryanair chief, Michael O’Leary, remarked: “Peter has an unrivalled knowledge of our business model. He will lead a significant transformation in the way we reward and interact with our pilots, improve their working environment and career development over the coming years as we grow the fleet to some 600 aircraft and expand our traffic.”
