A NIGHT of great celebrations was organised in Killarney on Friday to mark

the notable achievements of Peter Cahill and Richie Lawlor after their extraordinary wins at the Grand Prix Irish Poker Festival held in the INEC the previous weekend.

Peter, from Killarney, clinched the prestigious Grand Prix title and won a cool €35,000 for his efforts while Richie, from Lixnaw, went one better, taking the overall WPT title and a winner’s cheque for a whopping €65,000.

At the celebration in the Cue Club Killarney last Friday night, it was noted that Richie became the first Irish player to win a World Poker Tour title and he said he was feeling very humbled.

“I always felt I was capable of a win like this but I don’t get to play in these big tournaments too often so I’m absolutely thrilled,” he said.

“It was a tough final table with some of the best players in Europe on it, so coming out on top feels all the sweeter,” added the champ.

Peter Cagill was also in buoyant mood: “I came through a field of 2,500 players to win the Grand Prix title and I’m absolutely gobsmacked to be honest. It’s a credit to the standard of play here in my local club,” he said.
