‘People can’t be left get away with this’

Family holiday: Denis, Sharon, Sophie and Noah

A COUPLE holidaying in Killarney was distraught to find that two expensive bicycles – one of which they adapted to transport their disabled young son – were targeted and extensively damaged by vandals in town at the weekend.

Denis and Sharon Myers, from Mitchelstown, Co Cork, and their children Sophie (12) and six-year-old Noah, were on the last day of their week-long stay in Killarney when Denis’s parents arrived to join them for the night on Friday.

His parents cycled the bicycles to town, locked them securely close to the junction at East Avenue Road and Muckross Road and went for dinner at 8.00pm.

But they were horrified on their return two hours later to find both bikes had been badly damaged.

“They found the bikes in a terrible state on the ground. It appears that somebody had tried to steal them and because they couldn’t, they mangled all the wheels, making them absolutely useless,” said Sharon.

The upset family reported the incident to Gardaí and shared their story on social media in the hope that somebody might have seen something that can help pinpoint the culprits.

“It was daylight so someone must have seen something. People can’t be left get away with this,” she added.

“Our son is wheelchair bound and we had only bought the bikes a month ago so we could take him on cycles during the summer,” Sharon told KillarneyToday.com.

Noah has Escobar syndrome, a very rare congenital disorder that affects his joints and he also suffers from scoliosis and respiratory problems.

The Myers family said they had spent a wonderful week in Killarney and they were posting details of their adventures on their popular blog – Our Wheely Big Journey – which was set up to highlight the fact that disability doesn’t have to mean the end of a fun-filled life.
