DOZENS of secondary school students from Killarney will pedal their way over the county bounds next month to create a greater awareness of suicide and the problems that can lead to it.
In excess of 70 second level students from the town will participate in the Cycle Against Suicide project which will involve a marathon journey from Cork to Killarney, taking in the physically demanding county bounds.
Students from St Brendan’s College, St Brigid’s Presentation and Killarney Community College, as well as a number of their teachers, have signed up for the marathon event which will take place on Thursday, May 1.
They will depart from Cork city centre and pedal their way through Macroom and Ballyvourney to raise funds to help in the fight against suicide and the event will conclude at the Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre on the bypass road.
The students and their teachers have been training hard for the 86km event over the past two months and they are highly motivated in their task.
The participants have been collecting sponsorship in advance of the cycle and all proceeds from their efforts will be donated to South West Counselling Services in Killarney.
Killarney business MD O’Shea & Sons will provide and sponsor transport between Killarney and Cork for those involved.
The cycle has been organised and promoted by Kerry entrepreneur Jim Breen who became aware of the need to provide help when he participated in the RTE series The Secret Millionaire.
