A FUNDRAISING event in memory of a greatly loved Killarney woman, who lost a long battle with cancer last year, has raised much-needed funds for the oncology unit in Kerry University Hospital.

Mum of two Joan Herlihy, from Lissivigeen, was just 53 years of age when she passed away in February 2015 but despite her health problems, she had lived a remarkably full and active life, completing the 180km Ring of Kerry charity cycle just months before her death.

Originally from Castleisland, nature-loving Joan lived in Killarney throughout her married life with her husband, Dave, daughter Laura and son Paul and she was hugely involved in many aspects of community life, loving anything to do with nature and the great outdoors.

In Joan’s honour, her family and friends held a memorial walk last year and two cycles this year – one 55km and the other 25km – and the most recent event raised an impressive €5,000 for the local oncology unit.

Dave Herlihy and family have thanked all those who supported the event in memory of Joan either by cycling, donating or volunteering.
