A woman who had been the public face of An Taisce in Kerry for several years has died.
Dr Catherine McMullin, of Glenashe, Killorglin, passed away in St Joseph’s Home, Killorglin after a long illness.
A passionate environmentalist and outdoor pursuits enthusiast, she was to the fore of many positive community activities in Kerry and she committed so much of her time to An Taisce, the environmental watchdog charged with the responsibility of protecting Ireland’s heritage and safeguarding its future.
She maintained a watching brief on all planning matters on behalf of the organisation and was never slow to raise a flag or voice an opinion if matters of any concern arose.
A long-time member of the Kerry Mountain Rescue Team, Dr McMullin loved mountaineering and hillwalking and she had a very keen interest in archaeology.
Very widely travelled, she was recently honoured by An Taisce with an award to recognise her wonderful contribution to the organisation over many years.
She was also a popular member of the Killarney Sorpotimists Club and the Kerry Historical Society.
In a tribute, the Kerry Way Management Committee said Catherine was instrumental in developing its cultural and environmental integration.
“Her love for and great insight into local areas, her foresight and consideration for our environment in Kerry and its unique landscape was unwavering. Catherine committed much of her great energy to her beloved environment and local community,” the committee said.
Predeceased by her parents Michael and Mena McMullin, Killarney, and by her sister Susan, Catherine is survived by her brothers Bart and Frank, their wives Nancy and France, nieces and nephews Micheal, Marianne, Conor, Fionnuala, Emily, David and Roisin, grandnieces and grandnephews, brother-in-law Tony, relatives, neighbours and friends.
Reposing this Sunday evening at Flynn’s Funeral Home, Killorglin from 5.00pm to 6.30pm will be followed by removal to St James’ Church, Killorglin. Requiem Mass on Monday at 10.30am will be followed by private cremation.
Catherine’s Requiem Mass will be live-streamed on https://www.mcnmedia.tv/camera/killorglin-st-james-church.
The family has asked for donations, in lieu of flowers, if desired, to be made to St Vincent de Paul, Killorglin.
