Parks to be more proactive in enforcing regulations

Busy: The car park at Muckross Gardens. But are the occupants of all these vehicles these vehicles adhering to the 5km travel restriction?

THE National Parks and Wildlife Service and An Garda Síochána are to join forces to crackdown on members of the public who are breaching 5km travel rule regulations.

While Killarney National Park remains accessible to the public, it has seen a dramatic upsurge in visitors in recent weeks and, as a result, the car parks are oversubscribed and vehicles are being left on public roads.

The NPWS said it is now liaising with gardaí who will be more proactive in enforcing regulations.

While the park remains open, facilities and information points are closed on foot of government measures to combat the spread of Covid-19 and notices stressing the importance of social distancing have been erected in all parks and social media channels.

In a statement issued to KillarneyToday.com, the NPWS encouraged continued enjoyment of the wonderful outdoor resources but reminded the public of the importance of adhering to current Health Service Executive advice, particularly in relation to social distancing and not travelling more than 5km from home.

Walkers have been asked to keep at least a distance of approximately two metres between individuals and to avail of the numerous walks within the park.

“The NPWS asks individuals to avoid congregating closely in groups, even in these outdoor areas. People should access the closest amenity to them and if they can avoid using cars to travel there, all the better,” the statement read.

It added: “If visitors are driving we would ask them to park responsibly. If the car park at these sites is full, please visit at a different time. Please do not park on access roads as this can cause obstructions and block emergency access to sites.
