Park visitors hugely upset by crumbling roads

THIS series of snapshots clearly illustrates the absolutely shocking state of the roads that cyclists and pedestrians have to endure within Killarney National Park.

These images, all taken on the main route around Muckross and Dinis this week and sent to KillarneyToday.com by upset locals, show a crumbling roads network that poses a real health and safety risk for those attempting to enjoy the scenic attractions in what is Killarney’s most popular visitor attraction.

In some areas of the park, massive potholes appear to be several centimeters deep and a real danger to walkers and cyclists.

The condition of the roads in the park has been a major bone of contention in recent years but, it would appear, they are now deteriorating to such an extent that a whole new surface could be required as opposed to a tar and chip patching job.

The matter has again been raised with the authorities in recent days with one Killarney businessman also alerting Minister of State, Brendan Griffin, and Deputy Michel Healy-Rae to the problems being encountered.

“There have been hundreds of potholes in the national park for ages. It’s dangerous for cycling and walking and, in certain areas, the condition of the roads make it impossible to keep two metres apart,” he said.

“Any private sector company would not be permitted by their insurers to operate until these areas were made safe so I am questioning how this is not the case in the public sector?” the businessman asked in a letter to both Kerry TDs and to the National Parks and Wildlife Service.
