THEY might be going on parade in the capital but, like all good things, they were made in Kerry.

While Dublin, and O’Connell Street in particular, might be the main focal point for the 1916 commemorations this weekend, an interesting local link has been highlighted by Senator Mark Daly.

The wooden poles that will hold the national flags leading the parade through the streets of the capital on Sunday were actually made in the Kingdom.

They are the work of the team involved in the Kenmare Men’s Shed project and the consignment was delivered to the Taoiseach’s Department in plenty of time for the celebrations by Senator Daly and his father, Kenmare businessman Seán Daly.

The Fianna Fail senator is a member of the Government’s all-party consultation group on the Decade of Commemorations chaired by the Minister for Arts Heritage and the Gaeltacht.
