SEVEN historic GAA medals, which were of huge sentimental value to the owner, were stolen during a spate of after dark burglaries in the Muckross and Glenflesk area of Killarney at the weekend.

The thieves – believed to be an opportunist gang roaming the countryside – smashed their way into six houses between 6.00pm and 10.00pm on Saturday and all the properties were unoccupied at the time.

The incidents occurred in the Loughguitane area and it is understood the culprits gained access to the houses by forcing open back doors or smashing windows.

In one of the burglaries a picture frame was removed from the house which contained seven GAA memorabilia that is of enormous value to the owner who has issued an appeal for them to be returned.

The unique collection included a gold 1913 All-Ireland medal, silver Munster medals dating back to 1905, 1908, 1909 and 1912 and a Croke Cup medal from 1913.

If they are offered for sale to anybody then the Gardaí should be notified immediately or, although unlikely, they might have been discarded by the burglars as they made their getaway.

“The burglars were very neat so that home owners would hardly realise that their house had been broken into,” a Garda spokesman said.

Anyone that might have noticed anything suspicious in the area before, during or after the raids is asked to contact Killarney Garda Station on (064) 6671160.
