
Kerry County Council’s insurers paid out just over €1.4 million for 98 public liability claims in the first three quarters of 2024, it has been confirmed.
The pay-out compared very favourably with 2023 when the total for the year amounted to €4,442,710 for 116 cases, which included one historic exceptional claim.

Information provided following a notice of motion from Cllr Brendan Cronin revealed that there were 25 trips or slips on footpaths received in the first nine months of 2024, costing a total of €667,623.
Pothole-related incidents accounted for 22 cases with a pay-out of €3,157 while there were 18 other cases relating to either roadworks, road surface, flooding parks, beaches, amenities or public facilities.
The total cost of claims classified as ‘other’ was €759,471.
In 2023 €566,194 was paid out in for 27 cases involving slips or trips on footpaths, €7,634 was paid on 41 pothole-related claims and €3,868,882 was paid out on 11 cases classified as ‘other’.
Council officials stressed that individual payments per claim are confidential and commercially sensitive and all payments are made by IPB Insurance.
