Kerry Fine Gael general election candidate, Billy O’Shea, has issued a call to action, urging the next government to prioritise tangible progress on developing the Shannon Estuary into a global energy and logistics hub.
He said the Shannon Estuary represents the single greatest opportunity for sustainable economic growth in Ireland’s history and it must be a core focus for the next government,
“The Shannon Estuary represents the single greatest opportunity for sustainable economic growth in Ireland’s history. If elected, delivering on plans will be my number one priority,” he said.

Highlighting the ambitious goals set out in the Shannon Estuary Economic Taskforce Report, Mr O’Shea underscored the critical steps required to unlock the region’s capacity to create 50,000 green jobs by 2050.
“The resources are there – deep waters, proximity to wind energy and strategic access to Europe. Now is the time to inject determined political will to make this a reality and that is exactly what I intend to do,” he said.
He stressed, however, the importance of regional development as a national imperative. “For too long, rural areas have been overlooked. Investing in the Shannon Estuary isn’t just an environmental necessity – it’s an economic one.
“This initiative can breathe new life into local economies while placing Ireland at the forefront of global renewable energy innovation,” he remarked.
The Shannon Estuary is a once-in-a-generation opportunity and Kerry must not be left behind in its development.”
