KERRY County Council has been urged to book advertising space on online media platforms to promote the local area plan consultation process.
Cllr Maura Healy-Rae said in addition to the usual newspaper advertisements, the local authority should use social media sites and online news service providers to get the message across to a much wider audience.
She said online news sites in Kerry have “huge readership” figures and that should be used to the council’s advantage.
With newspaper sales having plummeting dramatically, locally as well as nationally, thousands of people have turned to online news sites for their daily news and sports feed as social media offers an unrivalled breaking up-to-the-minute news service, as it happens, seven days a week.
Council officials said the planning department will examine the use of other forms of communication, including social media in order to ascertain if this can improve the level of public participation in the planning policy process.
